For weeks the favourite to win the show was Danyl Johnson, but after his smug (but good) performance landed him in the sing-off this weekend, punters have lost confidence in him, meaning Joseph McElderry is now the favourite with the punters.

Not only is Joe McElderry now favourite to win The X Factor, but he’s Cheryl Cole’s only real chance of winning the show for the second year in a row, after Rikki Loney from her category was voted out two weeks ago, and her other contestant Lloyd Daniels is just… well, a poor man’s Joe McElderry.

The 22-year-old Scottish singer said Cheryl Cole was so terrified of her own solo routine on Sunday that her own acts had to calm her down. Rikki said: “I felt like I was mentoring HER.“

He continued: “She was really, really nervous. She kept saying, ‘I can’t believe how nervous I am’ and we kept reassuring her. She said she couldn’t believe that we were telling her it would be OK – like we were being her mentor.“

Although Cheryl get the approval of the studio audience and Simon Cowell for her performance on Sunday, other fans have described the performance as hideous. Despite some bad comments, that hasn’t stopped her track heading towards the fastest selling single of the year title, as well as the official top 40 chart show on Sunday.

But Rikki Loney failed to win over the public on the evening he performed a version of Aretha Franklin’s classic, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Last night, Rikki put the blame firmly on his X Factor mentor, Cheryl Cole.

He told TV Biz that he wished he took the advice from Whitney Houston and her producer, who advised him to dump the tricky soul song and sing Whitney’s own hit, My Love is Your Love.

He said: “I should have listened to Whitney. They advised me to change. I’d have liked to, but there just wasn’t any time. It was literally 24 hours before the performance. I couldn’t do it. Too much work had gone on – days had been spent working out the routine. I knew Respect was a massive risk. It didn’t pay off.“

Nobody likes a sore looser Rikki, quit blaming Cheryl and understand the reason you didn’t make it for the past three years on The X Factor. You were simply not good enough mate!!

On a night which saw Cheryl Cole Perform on The X Factor, and Whitney Houston launch her career comeback, it all came down to Simon Cowell to choose an act to leave the competition, after the public vote saw Rikki Loney and Rachel Adedeji in the bottom two.

Rikki Loney, mentored by Cheryl Cole sang a version of Westlife’s ‘Flying Without Wings‘, and Rachel Adedeji, mentored by Dannii Minogue sang a version of U2′s ‘With or Without You‘, both of whom did their absolute best to ensure they remained in the competition, but the decision came down to Simon Cowell.

Simon told the hopefuls that his decision would be based on their final performance, and their final performance alone, before he broke the news that he would be sending home Rikki, thus saving Rachel Adedeji for the second week in a row.

Rikki Loney was asked by Dermot O’Leary how he felt after the decision, to which Rikki replied: “totally gutted, but id like to thank everyone for their support.” Cheryl Cole also took a moment to say she was also “gutted” for Rikki, and that she couldn’t believe John and Edward were still in the competition. (I agree with her, do you?).

I don’t know about you guys, but I had high hopes for Rikki Loney, but we’re just not loving him right now. Whitney Houston warned Rikki that he maybe out of his depth this week. Simon Cowell also suggested Rikki raise his game if he stood any chance of winning the show.

Rikki Loney took on a huge hit, Aretha Franklin’s R.E.S.P.E.C.T, even managing to remove his hat for once. Unfortunately when it comes to belting out a hit, the backing singers do a MUCH better job. I really want to love Rikki, but I don’t.

On the plus side, he had a much better class of performance this week than in week 1. Good arrangement of the track too.

Dannii Minogue: “Well done… you’ve come so far. I see a little bit of Will Young performance and you were working the stage really well.“

Simon Cowell: “I will give you respect, because I think what you did tonight took a lot of guts, because it was quite clear from meeting Whitney and Clive that they weren’t supportive of the song choice. Unfortunately, they were right. The song was far too big for you – you went from a pub singer to a wedding singer in one week. It was uncomfortable.“

Cheryl Cole: “First of all, I’m going to say thank you for taking this song choice on. I know the comments from Clive and Whitney knocked you a bit. I thought you did a fantastic job.”
