Cheryl Cole has today begged the nation to stop panning her footy husband, Ashley Cole, say: “I just wish they’d all leave him alone.“
In an emotional chat with friends, the X Factor golden girl claims troublemaker Ashley isn’t as arrogant as many people believe.
Despite the England and Chelsea ace’s uncanny knack of landing in hot water, Cheryl, 25, told pals: “He’s a really soft guy underneath it all. His confidence is taking a real bashing.
“He isn’t very strong and this is doing him no good at all.” Just last month, Ashley, 28, hurled abuse at a female police officer outside a London club while Cheryl was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief.
The row ended with ranting Ashley taken to the nick and given an £80 fixed penalty for being drunk and disorderly. It is the latest in a series of transgressions involving £82, 000-a- week Ashley Cole and led doom-mongers to claim the couple’s marriage was on the rocks due to his behaviour.
But my source said: “Cheryl is actually rallying round in defence of her man. It’s funny that the girl is tougher than the man in the relationship but that’s how it is with Cheryl and Ashley.
“She is determined to make sure that she pulls him out of this rut and they can continue to be very, very happy together.“
Ashley was fined two weeks’ wages by Chelsea over his police outburst. And last year Cheryl Tweedy decided against showing him the red card when he allegedly played away with hairdresser Aimee Walton, 24.
Ashley proposed to Cheryl in Dubai in 2005 and they are tipped to return to the desert paradise when the football season ends this summer to renew their wedding vows.
My source added: “Cheryl still has very very strong feelings for her hubby. Don’t bet against them renewing their vows later this year.“
