The 29-year-old – who is unemployed – was among nine people held in connection with the raid on a post office last Monday. During the robbery, two men held up the premises with a gun and a machete.
Cheryl Cole is said to be in shock this evening over the news. Northumbria Police said they can’t reveal the identity of the people arrested due to ongoing investigations, but a source confirmed that Tweedy was one of those being held.
According to details released by the Met, three men and woman remained in custody while five other men have been released on police bail. The raiders struck the post office on Hailsham Avenue around 4pm and escaped with the shop takings.
Nobody was hurt during the incident. Two men and woman fled to a nearby shop and raised the alarm. Andrew Tweedy has described himself as the ‘black sheep’ of the Tweedy family in the past.
Andrew Tweedy – a persistent offender – has also approached his younger sister Cheryl everytime he needed help with legal fees. When he stole a car last year, it was the final straw for Cheryl, who informed Andrew that she’d no longer pick up the bill for his mistakes, and he’d have to fend for himself.
In an interview last year, Cheryl said she hoped fatherhood would help Andrew change his ways. “I haven’t actually spoken to him for a while, but he’s got a baby and I’m hoping that will be his turning point.“
In an interview by Andrew Tweedy last year, he said: “Cheryl wants to help me but I’m too far gone. I know I’m breaking her heart but I’m not strong enough to sort myself out. She says she will never give up on me.“
When approached, Cheryl’s management said the singer had ‘no comment’ to make on the matter.
