From The Times Online.

Quote
With her sweetheart status sky-high, Cheryl Cole could probably have sold out the O2 on her own. As it was, she played her biggest solo show to date as support for Black Eyed Peas, whose business-savvy leader, will.i.am, produced most of her chart-topping album, 3 Words, and is rumoured to have already written much of its follow-up.

But why was Cole hurried on stage 15 minutes earlier than announced, meaning lots of little girls missed the chance to hear her best-known song, Fight For This Love? Could BEP’s fiery frontwoman, Fergie, have been worried about being upstaged? Possibly.

In terms of audience appreciation, Cole came close to eclipsing the headliners, though musically she hasn’t yet the muscle to trouble one of the world’s bestselling bands.

The 26-year-old Girls Aloud singer and X Factor judge is still getting to grips with being the sole star on stage — during Boy Like You she blended in with six camouflage-clad dancers so well in a Janet Jackson-inspired routine that it was only her trousers that made her stand out. Slashed from waist to ankle and teamed with a tiny, silver top, the trousers were proof that how Cole looks matters more than her music sounds.

Yet, after a slow start, Cole’s charisma, long legs, excitable, Geordie-accented chat and ability to look drop-dead gorgeous in a hooded, slashed-back, sparkle-studded mini-dress really did obliterate the fact that when she stopped to tango with a sexy male dancer, her vocals carried on uninterrupted. The throbbing 3 Words had a hint of Madonna’s Ray Of Light, the outfits a definite dash of Kylie.

If Cole — or simply Cheryl, as she will surely soon be known — can sell herself as a hybrid of those two pillars of pop, Ashley can have the house.

They gave it a pretty positive 3/5.

From the BBC

Quote
Cheryl Cole has kicked off her first major UK tour as a solo artist in London, calling the gig a "dream".

The Girls Aloud star played an eight song, half-hour long set supporting the Black Eyed Peas at London's O2 Arena.

Speaking from the stage she said: "I can feel the energy coming from this room. It's like a dream to be up here."

Having already called in for two nights in Dublin, the tour continues until 1 June with further dates in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

With the 22,000 capacity venue still filling up Cole took to the stage at 7.30pm backed by a troop of six dancers and the four members of her live band.

Dressed in military camouflage she opened her set with number 1 single Fight For This Love and any suggestion that she might mime during her performance was immediately extinguished.
Song dedication

The 27-year-old from Newcastle managed an impressive three costume changes as she played songs including Parachute, 3 Words and a cover of Owl City's Fireflies before finishing with Stand Up.
Black Eyed Peas Cole was supporting headliners Black Eyed Peas, who played a 2 hour set

The closest she came to mentioning Ashley Cole - the pair are currently separated - was to dedicate Rain On Me "to all the ladies in the house tonight".

Speaking afterwards many fans said the X Factor judge had exceeded their expectations.

French student Elaine, from Paris, said: "She is the most beautiful women. I didn't think she would sing live, but she did. It was good."

A horrible review from The Guardian.

Quote
Pity Cheryl Cole. Her private life is bumpy, and now she is stuck opening for the Black Eyed Peas. That isn't flippant: the Peas' live show is a hits-and-special-effects blockbuster, and would eclipse any support act. For Cole, accustomed to being a cog in the Girls Aloud wheel rather than doing a solo turn, the contrast is even crueller.

Surrounded by dancers and swathed in white, she looked small and out of her depth. Her best songs, Fight for this Love and Parachute, were rattled off without passion; on 3 Words, a photo of the Peas' will.i.am (who sang on the record) got more applause than she did. Yet her shout-out to "all you strong ladies in the house" was supportively returned by ladies both strong and weak.

The pertinent difference between Cole and the Black Eyed Peas - apart from the latter's production budget, which paid for, among other things, a space-age motorbike and spinning record-deck – is that the Peas are effortless live performers. Putting four such raving extroverts on the same stage should have resulted in nuclear fission; instead, they worked with and around each other like the street band they were before their osmosis into family-friendly hip-poppers.
