We always knew which a host of stars such as Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, JLS, Miley Cyrus, Susan Boyle, Robbie Williams, Alexandra Burke and backing from Simon Cowell, the Helping Haiti Charity Single would do well in the charts.
But it exceeded everybody’s expectations as it stormed the charts this week by shifting 450,000 copies. Everybody Hurts sold 200,000 copies in its first two days on sale, and has become the biggest first week sales of any charity single since 2000.
Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company said: “The public have clearly taken the plight of the Haitian people to heart – this record is huge.” The original song was recorded by REM and the proceeds of its sale will be split between the Disasters Emergency Committee and the Sun’s Helping Haiti Appeal.
A spokesman from HMV added that the song is likely to become the biggest selling single of 2010. The Haiti Earthquake appeal has so far raised an astonishing £77 million.
For those of you who purchased the Helping Haiti – Everybody Hurts single, I’d like to thank you on behalf of all the people in Haiti.
