After loosing out on the Christmas number one spot to Rage Against The Machine last week, Joe McElderry was pinning all his hopes on getting to number one in the singles chart this week, which would make him the New Year No 1.
McElderry spoke of his happiness today after he bounced back from the Christmas number one race, after a massively publicised campaign to stop Joe getting to number one succeeded.
Joe’s cover of Miley Cyrus‘s hit, The Climb sold a massive 196,000 copies in it’s second week, compared to just 69,000 copies shifted by Rage Against The Machine, which ended up at number ten this week.
“I am so happy that the single is No.1. Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me, this has been the best Christmas ever and I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year,” said Joe after hearing of his chart success.
Cheryl Cole’s 3 Words failed to shift enough copies to give her a top spot in the charts, but the sexy Girls Aloud singer did finish up at number 4, which is a little higher than the previously predicted 7th place earlier this week.
So while we have a victory for our Joe McElderry – The Climb, Cheryl Cole’s second solo single failed to capture enough sales to top the chart, but as a lot of you have pointed out in the comments recently, most people wouldnt have purchased the single because they already have it on Cheryl Cole’s album.
Did Cheryl Cole deserve a higher spot in the charts and did Joe deserve his number one spot? Leave a comment below…

I was miffed, to say the very least, to hear that Joe wasn't Christymas No.1. However, I was ecstatic to hear that Joe was New Year No.1! It's still a No.1, so that's great and I'm well pleased for Joe.
